Renowned surgeon-scientist John S. Najarian, MD, led one of the largest and most innovative transplant programs in the world as chair of the Department of Surgery at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, from 1967 to 1993. The world’s 9th most cited scientist for 1981-90 (per the Institute for Scientific Information), Najarian developed a kidney preservation system and an antilymphocyte globulin formulation that caused patients less pain – key advances that fueled the long-term success of organ transplantation. A 1948 honors graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, he earned his M.D. in 1952 at the University of California, San Francisco. Author of more than 1,300 articles and several books, as well as founding editor-in-chief of the journal Clinical Transplantation, Najarian remains active today as a clinical professor of surgery at the University of Minnesota, devoted to his main passion: patient care.
